Call for Repairs if Your Heat Pump is Making These Noises

Catching problems early is a big part of keeping any climate control system in good condition. The faster you can catch issues, the sooner you can get them repaired and the better off your system will be. If you’re using a heat pump to stay cool this summer, one of the best ways to monitor for issues is to listen for strange noises while the system is operating. Let’s go over some of the more common sounds that indicate a problem with your heat pump.

Hissing

Hissing and gurgling noises indicate that air bubbles have started to form in your refrigerant line. This means that you have a leak somewhere in the system., which is draining it of the fluid that it needs to operate. A refrigerant leak will cause the output of the heat pump to slowly drop, eventually culminating in a full system breakdown. If you hear this happening, call for repairs immediately.

Grinding

Grinding is often caused by the bearings in your system’s air handler wearing down. The bearings are designed to reduce friction while the air handler is operating. As they wear down, the friction on the motor increases until it burns itself out. You’ll need to have a professional replace the bearings before that happens, if you want to save the motor.

Short Cycling

Short Cycling is where the system turns itself on and off every couple of minutes. This is a serious issue that dramatically increases the amount of wear and tear on the system. Eventually, a system that is left to short cycle will break down years ahead of its time. So, call for repairs as soon as you hear this sound to prevent that from happening.
