Furnace Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Winter is the most stressful time of year for furnaces. They are operating for many hours a week, which means more strain on the system and a greater chance of various parts malfunctioning. If you want to make sure that your furnace stays in the best possible shape this winter, you should make sure that you catch any problems with it as early as you can. With that in mind, watch for the following warning signs that your furnace is in trouble.

Loss of Output

A heating system that is not heating isn’t of much use. If your heating system’s output is dropping, there could be a number of things wrong with it. It’s possible that your burner assembly is partially, or entirely clogged. No heat can be generated if the burner assembly isn’t working properly. It’s also possible that the furnace is producing heat just fine, but can’t distribute it. This is often because of a malfunctioning air handler. Either way, don’t ignore a drop in output from your furnace. Call for repairs right away.

Strange Noises

If you’ve had your furnace for long enough, you know what it’s supposed to sound like when it’s operating. Odd noises are often an indication that something in the furnace is not operating the way it should be. Don’t dismiss odd noises just because nothing else seems to be wrong with the system. Have a professional examine it to make sure.

Rising Heating Bills

Your heating bills are going to rise and fall as you use the system. However, a sudden spike in heating costs from month to month that you can’t explain could be a sign of a furnace problem. You should have it checked, just to be safe.
