Air Conditioning Problems You Need to Know About

We’re getting pretty close to summer now, and you’re probably already using your air conditioner to keep cool on a regular basis. More usage means more wear and tear on the system, which means higher probability for things to go wrong. Keep an eye out for the following air conditioner problems this summer.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

Your air conditioner cools your home by using a part called the evaporator coil. The evaporator coil evaporates refrigerant to absorb thermal energy from the surrounding air. Condensate forms on the coil as the air temperature drops past the dew point. Normally, the flow of warm air over the coil maintains the temperature balance. If the flow of air is ever cut off, though, the condensate on the coil will freeze into ice.

While the evaporator coil is frozen, it will be unable to absorb heat from the surrounding air. The air conditioner output will drop significantly as a result. If the ice isn’t removed, it can spread to other parts of the system and cause serious damage. You’re going to want to call for repairs as soon as you notice ice on your air conditioner.

Short Cycling

Short cycling is when an air conditioner turns itself on and off every couple of minutes. It can be caused by a number of different issues, typically either a malfunctioning thermostat or a bad compressor. Turning on and off that rapidly dramatically increases the amount of wear and tear on the system, which, of course, makes it much more likely for parts to start failing. If you notice your air conditioner short cycling, you need to call for repairs right away to mitigate the damage.
