Furnace Issues to be Aware of This Winter

Winter is by far the most stressful time of year for furnaces. As the days get colder, the furnace is used more and more often to warm the home, which increases the level of wear and tear. Winter is the time of year when furnaces are most likely to develop issues, or have preexisting ones made worse. If you want your furnace to stay in the best possible shape, you need to be able to call for repairs as soon as possible after your furnace develops a problem. That’s why you should be able to recognize signs that your furnace needs repairs. Let’s take a look at some of those signs now.

Strange Noises

Furnaces make noise during operation, and there really isn’t a way around that. If you’ve had your furnace for a while, though, you are probably familiar with what could be classified as a normal sound versus an abnormal one. If your furnace starts making unusual noises during operation, it’s a sure sign that it needs repairs of some kind.

Short Cycling

Short cycling is when your furnace turns itself on and off every couple of minutes. This behavior is highly abnormal, and puts an extreme amount of stress on the furnace. It is caused by heat becoming trapped in the furnace, which causes the system to overheat and shut itself down as a safety measure. If the source of the heat issue isn’t fixed, however, the furnace will just keep starting up and shutting down indefinitely. Eventually, the stress of this kind of operation will cause the furnace to break down entirely. Shut down your furnace and call for repairs as soon as you notice this behavior.
