Improve Indoor Air Quality This Summer With an Air Purifier

woman-blowing-noseAs we get further into summer, it’s important to make sure that your home’s air quality is as high as possible. Poor indoor air quality will not only make it harder for you to remain comfortable, but can adversely affect your health as well. There are a number of different ways to make sure that your indoor air quality improves or stays high during the summer. One of the best ways, though, is to install an air purifier. Let’s take a look at why air purifiers are important, and how different types can benefit you this summer.

The Reason for Air Purifiers

Indoor air quality can decline for a lot of reasons, but one of the most common is the presence of microscopic airborne contaminants. These include things like dust, dander, pollen, mold spores, viruses, and bacteria. Breathing in these kinds of contaminants can cause allergy attacks to become more frequent, exacerbate conditions like asthma, or cause common illnesses like the flu. Despite these effects, most people don’t even realize that their indoor air quality is being affected by airborne contaminants. Just removing a large amount of these contaminants can be enough to improve a person’s health and comfort considerably, which is why it’s a good idea to install an air purifier.

Types of Air Purifiers

There are a ton of different kinds of whole-house air purifiers available on the market today, far too many for us to cover them all here. You should also consult with a professional before you make any decisions about what kind of air purifier to install in your home. Some may work better for your situation than others, and some might actually end up making things worse. Still, you should familiarize yourself with some of the more popular kinds of air purifier types. Here are a few of them:

  • Air Filters: These are the most popular kinds of air purifiers. Air filters use fiber mesh to capture contaminants from the air flowing through them. They tend not to require any power, since they’re installed in the ducts and the air will automatically flow through them when the climate control is being used. Air filters need to be changed regularly to avoid becoming clogged and blocking the air from flowing through the ducts.
  • Ionization Purifiers: Another common purifier type. Ionization purifiers release clouds of ion particles when they’re in operation. As the air flows through the cloud, the ion particles bind to contaminants in the airflow. The contaminants become too heavy to remain airborne, and collect on metal plates in the purifier. These plates can then be removed and cleaned.
  • UV Air Purifiers: A UV air purifier is a system designed to sterilize the air with ultraviolet light. Many kinds of germs and mold spores cannot survive contact with high levels of UV light, and will be killed or sterilized upon contact. This doesn’t remove them from your air, but it does prevent them from infecting and sickening you.
