Which Water Heater Type is Best for You?

The type of water heater that you install in your home is going to have a pretty significant impact over the next decade or so. So, it’s a good idea to make sure that you select the best possible water heater for your needs. If you’re not sure which water heater would benefit you the most, don’t worry. Read on to find out a bit more about the pros and cons of each water heater.

Tank

This is probably what you think of when you think about water heaters. A tank water heater stores a large amount of water in a storage tank, which it keeps heated at all times in case it needs to be used. Tank water heaters are popular for their convenience, and for how difficult it is to exhaust one’s supply. However, keeping water heated 24/7 does take more energy than other water heater types.

Tankless

A tankless water heater doesn’t use a tank, as you may have guessed. Instead, it uses a heat exchanger similar to a boiler to heat water on the way to its destination. Tankless water heaters only turn on when they are needed, making them more energy efficient than tank water heaters. However, they are more easily overwhelmed by demand.

Heat Pump

A heat pump water heater is a tank water heater with an evaporator coil attached to it. This coil evaporates refrigerant to collect thermal energy from the air around the water heater, which it then vents into the tank to help heat it. This makes the system capable of providing output levels similar to tank water heaters, without wasting as much energy.
