Which is Better: A Furnace or a Heat Pump?

We understand just how overwhelming choosing a new heater for your home can be—there are just so many great options out there! Of course, two of the most popular systems on the market today are the furnace and the heat pump, and for good reason! If you are having trouble deciding between these two systems, you’ve come to the right place. Below, we have outlined the benefits of each—that way, you can decide for yourself which one sounds like a winner. All you’ve got to do is keep reading to find out more (and as always, remember to contact our team when you need heating services in Birmingham, AL.)

Furnaces are the Bees’ Knees

Furnaces are by far the most popular home heating systems on the market today. Why? Because they’re efficient, effective, and reliable — these forced-air systems are capable of lasting for upwards of 15 years! Furnaces come in two different models:
  • Gas Furnaces: Natural gas is a widely available and efficient fuel source, so we recommend one of these systems if your home has access to natural gas lines.
  • Electric Furnaces: Electric furnaces are definitely the more efficient option. However, electricity can be rather expensive, so if you live in an area where electricity is relatively cheap, then you might want to consider this type of system.
Installing a furnace is a great way to keep you and your family warm and toasty all winter long!

Heat Pumps are the Cat’s Pajamas

Alright, enough about furnaces… let’s move on to the heat pump. Heat pumps work much like a traditional air conditioner, relying on the flow of refrigerant to transfer heat from one place to another. But, what sets the heat pump apart from a standard AC is the reversing valve, which reverses the direction the refrigerant flows through the system. This allows home heating in addition to cooling! That’s right: with just one system you’ll be able to heat and cool your home! And not only that, but these systems are super-efficient, highly effective, and come in both ducted and ductless models, so no matter how much space you have, you’ll be able to find a system suited for you!

Do We Have a Winner?

That’s up to you to decide! Of course, though, the best way to decide which system is right for you is by hiring a certified HVAC professional to come and assess the specific efficiency and comfort needs of your home. Trust us, only a professional has the tools, training, and experience to make the right recommendations — you really wouldn’t want to hire an amateur for a job like this! And yes, while there may be plenty of amateurs willing to provide these services, remember that an attempt to save money could end up costing you much more in the long run. Therefore, it is always better to call in a pro and get the job done right the first time around!
