The Benefits of Geothermal Installation This Summer

There are a lot of different options to consider when it comes to installing a new climate control system. Sure, you’ve got the traditional air conditioners and heat pumps available to you for staying cool this summer. However, they’re not the only options. A geothermal heat pump is a great way to ensure that your home stays cool this summer. Let’s take a look at the benefits of geothermal systems.

What is a Geothermal System?

A geothermal system is a heat pump, which means it offers both heating and cooling functions. Unlike air source heat pumps, though, a geothermal system relies on an underground pipe loop for thermal energy exchange. The pipe loop is buried at a depth of around 30 feet, and is filled with an antifreeze solution. The loop connects to the unit inside the home, which uses it as both a source and an escape route for thermal energy. While in cooling mode, the unit uses refrigerant to absorb heat from the home’s air and vents it into the liquid in the pipe loop. In heating mode, the system will siphon thermal energy from the heat transfer fluid in the loop and then release it into the home.

Advantages of Geothermal Systems

A geothermal system has all the advantages of a normal heat pump. So, you will save a great deal of money and space by having one geothermal system instead of two separate climate control systems. Unlike air source heat pumps, though, a geothermal system does not become less efficient as the temperature outside drops. The amount of heat located underground remains fairly constant at all times, providing a practically inexhaustible amount of thermal energy if the system needs it.
